A mantra, a vibration or a sound- ever wondered what ‘Om’ is? Ever thought why this simple sound is considered so prestigious and profound? Why many holistic rituals and practices begin with this four syllable word? Considered to be one of the most spiritual and powerful sounds — ‘’OM’’ is present in everything-human body, the cosmos and other living being. Activating this energy within ourselves can deliver the highest bliss, knowledge and self-realization. To reveal this energy within, one of the best techniques is OM Yoga.

Said to be the primordial sound emerged from the vibrations of the cosmic energy that created the universe, ‘‘Om’’ is the self-begotten. It is the representation of the creator that doesn’t need another syllable to create its sound. It is on its own and it exists in everything.

“Om’’ is an ideal mantra to start your yoga practice with. Chanting Om in the right manner reverberates this sound through the entire body from head to toe, filling it with pulsating energy that empowers us and radiates tranquility together. Chanting Om on a regular basis calms the mind, body, and soul.

What is Om Yoga?

Also known as Om Meditation, Om Yoga involves chanting of ‘Om’ or ‘Aum’. In this yogic technique, the two great spiritual possessions belong to us – the breath and sound, joined together to form Om Yoga. While performing this, one does not have to concentrate on any particular part of the body. The mind does waver around initially, the practitioner has to make sure that it comes back to focus via chanting. The practitioner observes all the thoughts and sensations arising during practice and deals with them calmly without distracting from breath and chanting

Steps to perform Om Yoga:

Sit comfortably in Lotus Pose or Vajrasana. You can do Om yoga while sitting in a chair also. Keep your back straight and relax. Place your hands on knees or thighs. Empty your mind and sit peacefully.

Close your eyes slowly and gently. Doing this, the visual distractions would be eliminated and brain activity comes down. This activity will unclutter the mind and calm it down.

Shut your lips and breathe naturally through the nose. Relax your jaw muscles and keep your lower and upper teeth slightly parted instead of clenching them. Focus on your breath while it goes in and out.

Chant ‘Om’ while you inhale and exhale. Instead of breathing to chant, fit your chant to the breath duration by breaking down the ‘OM’ syllable to ‘A-A-A-U-U-M-M. Follow it with silence and then repeat again. Say the first two syllables by opening your mouth widely and the next two by pressing the lips. Pronounce the last two syllables by placing the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth.

Keep the Om chanting in sync with the breath and continue it. You can also chant ‘Om’ mentally. Observe the internal vibrations created in the body while chanting ‘Om’. Slowly and gradually, your mind will be relaxed and you will sink into its waves naturally. Gradually, it will become soft, subtle, and silent. Soon you will be able to realize that ‘Om’ has been always present and active in your body. Also, your breath will go down automatically and become light.
